This is a photograph of an assembled Lunar Prospector Space Craft SCIENCE KIT. Here are five more photos of the assembled kit. Actually, that one photo above is an advanced prototype, made with the final laser-cut proofs, and manually applied detailing (it's the same photo you'll find on the front of the LPM kit package). The production model is a little more detailed, and more cleanly executed, than the prototype shown above. The model is 1/25 scale, measuring about 30 cm (11 inches) from the end of one boom to another.

LPM Parts A close-up of some of the LPM kit's parts is shown at right. We placed a piece of blue paper behind the parts sheet to scan the image, so everywhere you see blue is where the paper has been vaporized from the parts sheet. At the bottom of the image is a section of the Solar Panel which wraps around the spacecraft to generate electricity while providing shade. Its bluish-grey color represents the silicon solar cells, and the white dots, silver foil strips, and gold foil strips represent the electrical connections to the solar cells. Above it on the left is the top portion of the Spacecraft Bus. The lower portion is partly visible to its right. There is a lot of gold metal foil detailing applied to these parts to simulate the appearance of the spacecraft. The gold didn't show up very well in this scanned image, though. You can't see its specular reflection, and it looks a little green in the scanner's image. A portion of one of LPM's science instruments is visible at the top left of the image, and a portion of a propellant tank is on the right.

The LPM kit is probably the easiest of all SCI kits to assemble. The hardest part is waiting for the white glue to dry. The parts are very realistic-looking, and include all the spacecraft's major components, and all five of its scientific instruments. The fact sheet explains them all, as well as its sixth science experiment, Doppler Gravity experiment, which does not include a specific instrument on the spacecraft.

There are parts included inside the model which are no longer visible once assembly is complete. The reason for this, of course, is so that you'll know the spacecraft inside and out when you build the model.
