What are they made of?

Why paper?

• It's the perfect medium for spacecraft models! Spacecraft like like Mars Global Survayor, Lunar Prospector, and all were designed to minimize mass while maximizing strength. This is necessary to be able to launch from Earth and fly their missions in space. Laser-cut paper lets SCI also minimize mass while using the spacecraft's design to maximize strength! You'll find intricate trusses and structures reproduced. There are major advantages to using laser-cut paper. One is that we can apply lithography and metal-foil bonding techniques, making sure all the proper colors and details are present in your kit, without your having to paint them in. Another advantage is that we can label all the parts for your convenience while you assemble the kit. The glue you use with paper is non-toxic. Paper is a relatively easy material to work with. The use of 100% recycled paper is another advantage: look what's become of your discarded phone book! Also, paper products are perfectly suited for fast delivery by first class mail.

Are there discounts for teachers?

How long does it take to put one together?

• The Mars Polar Lander kit can be assembled in a couple of hours. The Lunar Prospector is the next easiest, requiring maybe three or four hours minimum, due mostly to the time waiting for white glue to dry after completing one step, and before starting another step. Galileo, Mars Global Surveyor, and HST take a couple hours longer than that, perhaps more. The idea is not to be in any hurry to assemble a kit. Many of the steps you use assembling an SCI kit are similar to steps engineers and technicians used to assemble the actual spacecraft, and that took MUCH longer.

If I order today, when will it arrive?

• Orders are usually sent out within a few days or a week. If we're particurly busy, your order may take up to three weeks before it goes out. During the month of December, we try our best to ship your order the same day we receive it. When you see the red "Out of Stock" sign on the home page, it may take 8 or ten weeks before you see the green "In Stock" sign back for that item. Shipments all go by First Class Mail (Priority Mail if more than 13 ounces) or Air Mail for international shipment. So, shipment takes another two or three days (overseas Air Mail may take up to 10 days).

Which is the easiest one to build?

Can a 9-year old build one?

• Depends. SCI KITs are designed to show you what comprises a space-exploring machine, and how it works. Spacecraft are complex machines. The model kits involve lots of reading, and introduce complicated new words. So, generally, we recommend them for people no younger than about 12 years old. Motivation and ability are certainly factors, though. A younger person who is driven to learn about space exploration, who has reading skill, and who has enjoyed building detailed models before, will also be sure to enjoy SCI KITs. It would not be fair, though, to require someone to build a model (such as in a school assignment, for example) if the individual really doesn't have a good deal of interest and internal motivation. These are kits for people of all ages who love to find out all about space exploration.
