GREAT STARTER FILES!  
Print an accurate scale model of Saturn and its complex ring system directly from this .stl file. Or download the source-code .scad file to edit and tinker with, and learn from its extensive comments, which show how it all works. Saturn's southern hemisphere is cut off so the planet and rings sit on a flat surface during and after printing. The planet is an accurately oblate hemi-spheroid, with main rings A, B, and C, plus representations of the inner D Ring and the outer F Ring. The Cassini Division, and the finer Keeler, Enke, and Maxwell gaps are all represented.

DSN Beam Waveguide Deep Space Station

The 34m Deep Space Station Files

This extraordinary 1:250 scale model of a 34-meter diameter Beam Waveguide (BWG) Deep Space Station prints easily without needing any support material. It illustrates the antenna's mechanical structure and its microwave beam-waveguide system. It shows correctly how the dish rotates in azimuth and elevation above-grade, while the waveguide tubes articulate to reflect radio signals to and from the receivers and transmitters, which are located below-grade (not represented in the model). The BWG stations are the newest design in NASA's Deep Space Network (DSN). These exquisitely precise ground stations comprise the thousands of tons of concrete and steel which constitute the "other end" of basically every interplanetary spacecraft. This model was designed to reproduce key aspects of the DSN station at least an order of magnitude better than the downloadable paper version.

For printing using FDM, it requires only a single-extruder machine; no support material needs to be generated. Print using white ABS plastic. The main reflector dish requires an 8-inch print platform, but all the other parts may be printed on a 4-inch platform.

The Cassini HGA File

This High-Gain Antenna dish assembly (HGA) adds realism to the Free Downloadable NASA Cassini Spacecraft paper 1:37 scale model, which is available here. The paper HGA on the model is its weakest link as far as accurcy of its visual appearance. This file incorporates the HGA main reflector, its external bracing, central tripod, subreflector, low-gain antenna, waveguide, and the complex central feed assembly that serves Cassini for communications, radar, and radio science. It also includes the two sun sensors, which sit behind their holes in the main reflector. All these components are integrated into one printable object. Compare with the visual appearance of this 3D graphic image of Cassini.

For printing using FDM, it requires a dual-extruder machine; external and internal support material is generated, which must be printed using a soluble plastic so that it can be removed without damaging the delicate component structures. Print using white ABS or PLA plastic, and high-impact polystyrene soluble plastic for support.

The Voyager Mag Boom .STL File

Download this .stl file to print a Voyager Magnetometer Boom component on your 3D printer. We recommend using yellow ABS plastic. Fold lengthwise and snap together into a triangular cross-section boom. Print one for a half-scale length boom, or print two and glue them together end-to-end for a full-scale boom. ABS plastic is soluble in acetone, which can be used to weld the pieces together and weld them to your Voyager SCI Kit model.

The HGA Assembly .STL File

Use this for Voyager and Magellan SCI Kits. This high-gain antenna (HGA) print file offers some important visual advantages over the high-density styrofoam and the laser-cut card-stock components that comes with the Voyager SCI Kit (VSK) and the Magellan SCI Kit (MSK).

A full-size print of this file does happen to be the correct scale for the free Cassini Spacecraft model, but the feedcone in the center does not replicate Cassini's more complex feed array (look for the Free Downloadable CASSINI-HGA file). The main reflector is paraboidal, which is more accurate than the spheroidal shape of the SCI Kits' styrofoam HGA. It also has a more accurate thickness, which is especially visible at the edge of the dish. It includes the hole for the sun sensor assembly. Integrated into one printed piece are: the six-strut tripod, the subreflector, the central-dish feedcone, the low-gain antenna, and its waveguide. The main reflector has a hole for the sun sensor assembly. This one printed part replaces a total of seven SCI Kit parts.
